Family Portrait Photography in Mountlake Terrace: What to Expect
Planning a family portrait session near Seattle? Here''s everything you need to know — from what to wear to how to keep kids calm — to get photos your family will treasure for decades.
Family portraits are one of the most meaningful investments you can make. The kids grow up fast. The moments pass. A great portrait session captures who your family is right now — and gives you something to hang on the wall for the next 20 years.
Here's what to expect when you book a family portrait session at Megastar Photography in Mountlake Terrace.
Before the Session: Coordinating Outfits
You don't need to match — you need to coordinate. The goal is a cohesive color palette, not identical outfits.
A simple approach: choose one anchor color (a navy, a warm burgundy, a sage green) and build everyone's outfits around it. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or text. Layers add visual interest — a cardigan, a denim jacket, a scarf.
Neutral tones with one pop of color photograph beautifully. Earth tones (cream, tan, rust, olive) are timeless and work well in both studio and outdoor settings.
Timing: When to Schedule
For studio sessions, timing is flexible — we shoot year-round. For outdoor sessions in the Seattle area, late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) offer the best light and weather.
For families with young children, schedule the session at a time when your kids are typically at their best — not during nap time, not right before dinner. A well-rested, recently-fed child is a much more cooperative subject.
During the Session: What Actually Happens
We start with the full family group, then move to smaller groupings — parents together, kids together, individual portraits. This gives you a complete set of images that works for everything from holiday cards to wall art.
For younger kids, David uses a relaxed, play-based approach. We're not trying to get stiff, posed shots — we're capturing real moments. Laughter, connection, the way your youngest always reaches for your hand.
Sessions typically run 60–90 minutes, depending on the package.
After the Session: Your Gallery
Your edited images are delivered to a private online gallery within 7–10 business days. From there, you can download your files, share the gallery with family, and order prints directly.
All packages include a print release, so you can print your images anywhere — or order professional prints directly through Megastar Photography's print services.
